Being courteous to people, especially those with whom we disagree, is a very useful rule of thumb if we want to improve the chances of learning something worth knowing.
Unfortunately, yet another fact missing in modern politics is that some of the best ideas can be put forward by some of the people we dislike the most. Even the worst tyrant may have something useful to say.
To give an example, evil and ruthless though they were, Adolf Hitler and his top henchmen were pioneers in passing laws to prevent and prosecute cruelty against animals.
The belief that we should treat our opponents with courtesy and avoid ad hominem (personal) attacks therefore forms the basis of our third Rule of Engagement.
